Experience from Bernard Zweers
“Being a trusted advisor on mathematical optimization models for organisations that help the world to become more sustainable is what I enjoy most from working at Doing the Math.”
As an optimization modelling consultant, you are an expert in the field of mathematical modelling. What I enjoy most is creating optimisation models that support companies to become more sustainable. The projects we do for a customer, usually take at least a year, so you build a strong relationship with the customer, and you can identify the right solution method for their problems.
Besides the client work, there is also time for internal projects in which you may develop a general software package together with a student assistant, work out a strategy for business development, or evaluate tools that we could use to streamline our internal processes. Of course, there is also time to attend relevant webinars and conferences to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
Although Doing the Math is a remote company, I feel a strong connection with my colleagues. As we are a small team and we have twice per week meetings in which we only talk about non-work related topics you get to know each other really well. This relationship is even more strengthened by the in-person meetings that we have four times per year in which we spend a week together. In daily life, you usually only have a few meetings per day, so there is a lot of flexibility to arrange your work in the way that suits you best at the place that works best for you. I visit a coworking place two days per week, but also work sometimes at other places, for instance when visiting family.
